As Muslims we are obligated to adhere to these 5 pillars of the faith.

1. Testify that there is only one God, and Muhammad (s.a.w.) is His Messenger-As human beings we are the highest of creation.  There is nothing higher than us except ALLAH, the Creator.

2. Salat (prayer)-After you have determined that only ALLAH is above you, the next logical step is to submit to that which is greater than you.  As Muslims we submit only to ALLAH.  Salat is done 5 times a day at appointed times.

3. Zakat (charity)- Zakat is an obligatory tax on all Muslims able to pay it.  Zakat is equal to 2.5% of the excess money you have at the end of the year, after you have taken care of all your obligations.  This money is for the less fortunate in the Muslim Community.  Charity is also the giving of money to carry on the work and mission of the Mosque.  Charity also means giving back to the creation by protecting the environment, saying a nice word to somebody etc.

4. Siyam (fasting)- As Muslims we are obligated to fast during the holy month of Ramadan.  During this month we abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset every day for 30 days.  ALLAH says “He has ordered us to fast so that we may gain self restraint.”  Ramadan is a joyous time for Muslims and is culminated by a festival and prayer called Eid ul fitr.

5. Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca)-Hajj signifies the universality of man, and the Oneness of God. Every qualified Muslim is obligated to perform Hajj least once in their life if they can afford the trip.
